Down

Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness week and this year’s theme is ‘Kindness.’

During the last couple of months, the focus has primarily been on acts of kindness towards others. Although coming together as a community has been incredibly important, we often forget to make time for ourselves. We may not realise, but cleaning has a lot more benefits than just a healthy home. It has been backed up by scientific research that cleaning and tidying can be beneficial to our mental health. Here, we look at some of the ways it can help.

Removing clutter from your home and mind

One study found that those who described their house as being chaotic or messy showed increased levels of the stress. Your home’s clutter is therefore thought to contribute to stress levels. Meaning a tidier home leads to better mental health. Clutter is not just in the space we live in, it’s getting its way into our minds. It also makes it more difficult to relax when our surroundings are messy.

The best way to combat this is by getting the whole family involved in reducing the mess. By targeting one area or room at a time, you will gain a sense of accomplishment each time you finish tidying a space. If everyone in the family also takes part, they will feel more responsible for keeping on top of it. Also, spending time with them doing this will contribute to the instant mood boost, especially if you team it with some motivational music!

Mindful cleaning

Removing clutter is good for our mental health. But the most important things we should be doing is checking in with ourselves. We tend to forget that processing how we’re feeling can be beneficial to catching any bad moods in their tracks. Mindfulness is a practice that has gained a lot of attention recently. It teaches us to live in the moment and has been found to promote happiness more so than daydreaming about something pleasant.

Therefore when we clean, we should pay attention to the immediate task such as the feeling of the water on our hands or the motion of scrubbing. Studies have found that this practice can relieve stress as well as improve sleep. As this can be done at the same time as cleaning, it is an easy addition to make to your routine for a better state of mind.

Be kind to yourself and your home
