Down

Christmas tends to bring out our naughty and nice sides, and for some reason, both sides of the spectrum tend to be quite messy! Especially when it comes to Christmas movies. We’re not about to give you the recipe for Buddy’s special elf spaghetti. Instead, we’re going to focus on another Christmas classic that is actually celebrating its 30th anniversary! Home Alone chronicles one kid’s creative solution to home defence, and it’s easy to see why people of all ages love this movie. It has humour for sure, but sometimes we just want to watch someone make a colossal mess (especially when we don’t have to clean it up!) But, say you did need to know how to clean carpet at home after Kevin McCallister got to it—what would you do?

How to Clean Carpet at Home When There’s Paint on It

Let’s hope your kids don’t get ‘inspired’ by Kevin’s traps. But even if they don’t, there’s always a chance that the next arts and crafts period or home DIY project will result in paint your carpets.

Here’s what to do if there is gloss paint on your carpet:

  1. Scrape up as much as possible with a blunt knife or spoon.
  2. Blot with kitchen towel to absorb any excess liquid.
  3. Put a little white spirit on a cloth and dab the area.
  4. Blot with kitchen towel.
  5. Apply 1001 Mousse.
  6. Massage the product into the stained area.
  7. Remove excess liquid with a dry cloth.
  8. Leave the area to dry, then vacuum.

Here’s what to do if emulsion paint is on your carpet:

  1. Scrape up as much as possible with a blunt knife or spoon.
  2. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.
  3. Repeat until all paint is removed.
  4. Apply 1001 Mousse.
  5. Massage the product into the stained area.
  6. Remove excess liquid with a dry cloth.
  7. Leave the area to dry, then vacuum and finish off with a spray of your favourite 1001 Carpet Fresh.

In both cases, if a large amount of paint has been spilled, use 1001 Shampoo to give your carpet a deep-down clean. Always test an inconspicuous area of carpet before use, and always wear rubber gloves. For an extra burst of freshness, consider spraying 1001 Carpet Fresh to leave your room smelling naturally clean.

How to Clean Carpet at Home When There’s Glue on It

Either an elaborate booby trap or from Christmas crafts, glue and feathers are sure to cause problems with your carpet. But don’t worry, we have an easy solution to remove any stains!

  1. Place ice cubes in a plastic bag and apply to the glue stain.
  2. Rub over the area until brittle and then cover with a tea towel or kitchen roll and shatter the glue with a rolling pin or heel of a show.
  3. Vacuum thoroughly.
  4. Apply 1001 Carpet Stain Remover and wait for a maximum of 5 minutes.
  5. Massage the product into the stained area.
  6. Remove excess liquid with a dry cloth.
  7. Once the area is dry, vacuum and finish with a spray of 1001 Carpet Fresh Frosted Winter Berries.

How to Clean Carpet at Home When There’s Bird Droppings on it

Although it’s the festive season, we’ve all heard of at least one case of a visitor (and not Father Christmas) emerging from the chimney. Or what if Brenda Fricker decided to drop by for a visit in the future and brought along her pigeons? (Or, you know—you have a pet bird?) 1001 has the answer!

  1. Remove all solid residue from your carpet.
  2. Blot area with kitchen towel.
  3. Apply 1001 Pet Stain Remover and wait for a maximum of 5 minutes.
  4. Massage the product into the stained area.
  5. Remove excess liquid with a dry cloth.
  6. Leave the area to dry, then vacuum.

As a caution, we do not recommend using 1001 Carpet Fresh around your pet birds.
